POSITION TITLE: GIS Data Collector Student

POSITION SUMMARY:
Summer Student. Incumbent will collect water, sanitary and storm infrastructure data & assist in recording collected data into the existing GIS database. Additional work will be given within the Engineering Department.
DIRECTION RECEIVED:
The incumbent works under the supervision of the Environmental & Facilities Superintendent and GIS Expert.
DIRECTION OF OTHERS:
The GIS Data Collector – Student position is without direct supervisory responsibilities.
REVENUE, ASSET AND EXPENDITURE SCOPE:
No identified responsibility for revenue, assets and expenditures.
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Collection of water, sanitary and storm infrastructure using a handheld GPS and other field collection methods.
- Assists with the updating and maintenance of the GIS database.
- Assists with the basestation correcting of GPS collected data.
- Utilizes the existing ArcGIS Version 9.3, GPS Pathfinder Office Version 3.2, Autocad Map 2000/2008 3D and database (Microsoft Excel & Access).
- Assisting with various Engineering tasks such as locating of services and surveying.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Students must have completed a full year of studies (September to April) at an accredited post secondary institution (college, university, or other accredited institution). Additionally, the student must be returning to studies immediately following their summer employment.
- GIS educational background, and or related employment experience would be an asset
EFFORT
Duties require some muscular exertion and strain for short periods (mainly working outside).
WORKING CONDITIONS:
The GIS Data Collector – summer student position is required to work a 40-hour workweek during regular business hours. Position will run from May until September. Work outside of regular business hours may be required due to uneven workflow and requirements to meet deadlines. Daily work activities are spent in a combination of inside office data entry, and outside field data collection. Wage is $14.56 per hour.
